Why A Story About Leadership?Hi, I'm Mark Hollingsworth, the author and creator of this series of leadership books. I wanted to give you some background as to how I created these informative and fun books.
Despite having now held a variety of leadership positions for the past 30 years I still find myself having to re-visit 'the basics' - those core skills we use as leaders that form the foundation of who we are. I always have struggled with delegation, constantly finding ways to put off letting go of tasks I know deep down others in my team can more than competently manage. To help me come to terms with my 'delegation demons' I decided to write a book about it! Instead of a traditional leadership text book style I thought it would be more interesting (and enjoyable) to write about my experiences in the form of a story, so last summer I sat in the garden for a few days thinking about all my past frustrations, failures and successes with delegation. From this session came the idea for this book! I have since written the second in the series covering Time Management in the 21st Century and am now researching my third on the subject of leadership at meetings. |
The First Book:
|
About The Characters and StoryI decided to create a key character and a fictional organization in which to set the stories. The concept is to follow a new leader, in their first position of significant responsibility within an organization, as they grapple with the demands now facing them as a new leader. I called the new leader Quinn Spencer - I used the name Quinn as I wanted to create a gender-neutral name.
Quinn has recently been appointed as the divisional manager of ‘Geographical Area A’ for the fictitious company called the Stratum Group Inc. Stratum provides a variety of training solutions across a number of industries. They develop custom-made solutions as well as providing off-the-shelf versions. There are four geographical areas in Stratum, all controlled by the vice-president of sales and marketing Andrew Sachs. Quinn reports directly to Andrew. The first book covers delegation and details the first few weeks of Quinn's new job. The second book moves onto the second month. I have kept each book to just over 10,000 words and about 80 pages, as I wanted the book to keep focused on the essential basic skills. To help in the learning process I then summarized at the end of each book the key learning points as a quick reference guide. If you are a new leader, or more experienced but looking a quick 'refresher' in the basic skills of leadership, these books are designed and written for you! |
